Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ Certified Diamond

Whitney Houston‘s rendition of Dolly Parton ‘s “I Will Always Love You” has been certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America, or RIAA.

The RIAA certifies both albums and singles diamond once they have sold and streamed 10 million equivalent units in the United States.

Houston’s The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album was certified 18-times platinum. “I Will Always Love You” is part of that album and marks her first diamond single.

The late pop music icon’s 1985 album Whitney Houston and 1987 album Whitney were certified 13-times platinum and 10-times platinum, respectively.

Houston recorded the cover of Parton’s 1974 song for The Bodyguard, a 1992 film in which she made her cinematic debut. The song remained on top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 14 weeks, and sold 3.1 million copies to become the year’s top-selling single.

“I Will Always Love You” was played during Houston’s funeral in 2012.

Houston is the third female artist to get a diamond certification for an album and single after Mariah Carey and Taylor Swift.
