Questlove Reveals ‘Summer Of Soul’ Soundtrack To Drop Next Month

Filmmaker, director and producer Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson has announced that the soundtrack for his documentary Summer of Soul (.Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised) will drop on January 28, 2022.

Summer of Soul is a documentary film about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. It had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on January 28, 2021 and had a limited theatrical release in the United States on June 25, 2021. It received acclaim from critics, with praise aimed at the footage restoration.

The Roots drummer selected 17 live performances from the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival to create the soundtrack album. Questlove and Sony’s Legacy Recordings will release the soundtrack on January 28.

“It goes beyond saying that you can’t have a monster music journey on film without an equally awesome soundtrack . These performances are lightning in a bottle. Pure artistry,” Questlove said.

The project’s lead track, “Sing a Simple Song” performed by Sly & The Family Stone, was released last Thursday.

The soundtrack also features performances by Nina Simone, Gladys Knight & The Pips, B.B. King, Mahalia Jackson, Mavis Staples, The Operation Breadbasket Orchestra & Choir and more artists.
