The Monkees‘ Micky Dolenz recently opened up about the band’s “weird” tour with the legendary Jimi Hendrix.

Dolenz recalled that he first saw Hendrix playing in New York’s Greenwich Village. But he got the idea to invite The Jimi Hendrix Experience on a tour along with the band after seeing them perform at at the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967. The Seattle-born guitarist had teamed up with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell as the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

“I mentioned to our producers at the time – we were looking for an opening act for our first big world tour – and I said, ‘How about these guys?’ Because they were very theatrical,” Dolenz told Ultimate Classic Rock. “Let’s face it, the Monkees were a theatrical act. I guess they liked the idea and we liked the idea, and there you go.”

Dolenz added that he and Michael Nesmith “were absolutely entranced with him and his performance. He was a wonderful guy. He was very young, maybe only a year or two older than I was.”
