Michigan Gov. Signs Bill Naming Portion Of Highway After Aretha Franklin

Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin will soon be honored by the state of Michigan by having a portion of the M-10 freeway in Detroit renamed as the “Aretha L. Franklin Memorial Highway.”

A bill approving the renaming, which has been signed by Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer, seeks to honor the “creativity and voice contributed to our musical and cultural history in Michigan” by the late singer.

Franklin grew up in Detroit and learned the ropes at the New Bethel Baptist Church located on Franklin Boulevard.

A few Republicans who opposed the bill argued that such an honor ought to be given only to civilians of the likes of military veterans and first responders.

The legendary singer passed away in her home last August, succumbing to pancreatic cancer at the age of 76.
