Ian Gillan Recalls Eating Dog Biscuits During Early Deep Purple Days

Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan revealed in an interview that in the band’s early days he supplemented his diet with dog biscuits from the local pet shop to survive.

“The adversity is part of the fun. You don’t think it is at the time, but it is,” Gillan told Mojo recalling his hard times during Deep Purple’s formative years.

Gillan’s position in the rock band was cemented after their fourth album, 1970’s Deep Purple in Rock, turned out to be a hit.

“I was thrilled, scared. I thought, ‘This is what it’s all been leading up to,’” Gillan said.

He added that he still loves performing as part of Deep Purple.

“I can’t in a million years imagine any of us being close socially if we weren’t in Purple,” he said. “The bonding factor is the music and the humour. I’m underplaying it, but I absolutely adore it.”
