Foreigner and King Crimson co-founder Ian McDonald has died at the age of 75.
McDonald died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on Wednesday, February 9, after a battle with cancer, according to his agent.
McDonald, a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, was known as one of the key architects of progressive rock. He played both saxophone and keyboards in King Crimson and co-wrote songs for the band’s iconic 1969 debut In the Court of the Crimson King.
He also co-founded Foreigner and featured on classics like “Hot Blooded,” “Cold as Ice,” “Feels Like the First Time” and “Double Vision.”
Original Foreigner keyboardist Al Greenwood posted a social media message saying McDonald was “like a brother to me. A true musical genius, Ian’s musicianship was an integral part of launching both King Crimson and Foreigner into legendary status.”
“His contribution to Foreigner’s success was immense. Ian was a dear friend, a kind and wonderful man, and I will miss him terribly,” Greenwood added.
