Cyndi Lauper‘s music video for “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” has earned over 1 billion views on YouTube, earning the singer her first entry in the billion-view club on the video streaming platform.

“Girls Just Want to Have Fun” was originally written and performed by American musician Robert Hazard, who released the single in 1979. However, the song was later covered by Lauper, who released it as the lead single for her debut studio album She’s So Unusual in 1983.

Lauper’s version gained recognition as a feminist anthem and was promoted by an award-winning music video. The music video was first uploaded to YouTube in October 2009.

“A lot of people don’t realize this, but ‘Girls’ is really a political song,” Lauper said in a statement about the track. “When I got my feminist hands on it, I knew I wanted to make it into an anthem for all women.”

“Sonically, I wanted the song to be uplifting and joyful. When it came time to make the video, it was really important to me to make sure we included women from every walk of life,” she added. “I wanted every little girl watching the video to have the joyful experience of seeing herself on that screen. I wanted us to be a community.”

The single was Lauper’s breakthrough hit, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and becoming a worldwide hit throughout late 1983 and early 1984. The song received Grammy Award nominations for Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

“Girls Just Want to Have Fun” is just the fifth song from the 1980s to surpass 1 billion views on YouTube, alongside Guns N’ Roses‘ “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” A-ha‘s “Take on Me,” Michael Jackson‘s “Billie Jean” and Rick Astley‘s “Never Gonna Give You Up.”
